Spotlight: 'In Movies'

Park Motive are an enigmatic five-piece who have been making quiet waves in the Bristol music scene for the past couple of years, with the release of their latest single ‘In Movies’ those soft ripples are fast becoming tidal waves. Strange and romantic lyrics, house-influenced beats and a melodic delivery make for an exciting track you won’t be able to stop listening to all summer.

Park Motive’s sparse lyrics give you just enough to paint a picture of a narrative while leaving ample ambiguity for it to continuously evolve with each new listen. However, ultimately it is the musical craftmanship that’s gone into the making of ‘In Movies’ that will keep you coming back again and again. On Friday night I had the good fortune to witness Park Motive perform their latest hit at the Stag and Hounds in Old Market. Here’s what they had to say about their inspiration behind ‘In Movies’…

"In Movies started off as just a chord sequence that I was jamming through on a guitar about 6 months ago. I was listening to loads of Brazilian music from the 70s and 80s at the time (for example Arthur Verocai’s self-titled album), which probably heavily influenced the harmony and chord choice. After a couple days of noodling about I tried to see how the chords sounded on synth and eventually settled for the swirly sound that can be heard in the track. After this, every other musical aspect seemed to fall into place very quickly and naturally.

At the time I was also really into a producer called Silicon; he has an awesome track called ‘God Emoji’ that really inspired me. Another strong influence is, of course, Thundercat: especially his first album ‘Golden Age of Apocalypse’. I’m really into the synth lines in his tracks.

At the moment I’m quite into writing lyrics that convey scenarios outlining some of the stranger characteristics of human nature. I’ll leave the narrative of ‘In Movies’ open for your interpretation, although it has a very fixed story. I quite like it when people interpret lyric meanings in different ways."
