Spotlight: Surf's Up!

Famous (Adjective)

1. Known about by many people.

2. (informal) Excellent.

“Surf’s Up!” sounds like having a panic attack in a haunted house at a fair ground but then remembering it fondly. The debut single by London-based six piece ‘Famous’ feels both expertly crafted and dirty. There’s something overwhelming about the layers and layers of sound built over a sample I can only really describe as spooky. Despite its aura of anxiety-riddled nightmares “Surf’s Up” is super catchy and with each and every listen I find it harder not to dance along. Famous’s nihilistic lyrics fall somewhere between depression memes and a genuine cry for help. The lyric “I wish I was dead or at least in someone else’s head” makes me laugh on days where it gets dark at 4pm and all of my essays are late.

Famous are a band to watch out for – after releasing their debut single on Friday they opened HMLTD’s warehouse party that very same night. Rumour has it that they will soon be gracing the shores of Bristol at none other than the infamous Spinny Nights. They’re set to be accompanied by local favourites La-Z-Eye and Zebrafi with a limited edition disc-jockey stint from Lynks Afrikka herself; a night that guarantees dancing till the wee hours and more than a few broken hearts.

Famous may not yet be well known, but they are excellent.
